Karak Castle Center Launches Project to
Empower Women Parliamentarians in Jordan
Today, Thursday, the Karak Castle Center for Consultation and Training launched the "Empowering Women in the Jordanian Parliament" project, in partnership with the Ministry of Political and Parliamentary Affairs, the Jordanian Women Parliamentarians Forum, and with the support of the French Embassy.
The project aims to strengthen the leadership skills of female members of Jordan’s 20th Parliament, empowering them in areas of media engagement and appearance, legislative development, and advocacy through capacity-building programs and knowledge enhancement.
Ms. Esra’a Mahadin, Executive Director of the Center, stated that “this project is part of our broader portfolio focused on the political empowerment of Jordanian women. Through diverse activities, it seeks to reinforce women’s leadership by enabling them to occupy decision-making positions, while also addressing prevailing social norms that limited their leadership roles. By amplifying their media presence and showcasing them as influential parliamentary and political leaders, we aim to shift public perceptions.”She emphasized the need to activate the role of women parliamentarians within parliamentary committees so they can contribute effectively to reviewing laws and legislation and addressing national priorities, all within a more inclusive and democratic political environment
In the same context, H.E. Dr. Tamara Nasreddin, Chair of the Jordanian Women Parliamentarians Forum, expressed her satisfaction with the collaboration, stressing the importance of such initiatives. “A strong and impactful media presence requires high levels of self-confidence, as well as practical and academic skills. Effective use of media not only broadens community outreach but also increases public engagement with the critical issues that affect their daily lives.”
The launch included a specialized training program focused on media engagement strategies for female parliamentary leaders in Jordan. The training covered best practices in interview preparation, message development, and communication skills within the parliamentary setting and in the public domain. It also featured peer-to-peer learning and practical experience-sharing sessions. The program was facilitated by renowned media expert Ms. Bayan Tal.
The training featured two key sessions: The first session was led by H.E. Dr. Marwan Muasher, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Media, who discussed state media discourse, media message crafting, and crisis communication. The second highlighted the experience of Ms. Samar Al-Tarawneh, Director of the Women's Empowerment Unit at the Independent Election Commission. She stressed that women’s participation in the political and electoral process should not be reduced to numbers, but should be assessed by real influence and active leadership.
